Richard Carr-Hyde, Why Juniors must exercise:
There is an old school belief held by some people that exercise for young children is bad for them, can lead to an increased risk of injury and could even be dangerous.
As more research is undertaken, this is being shown to be totally unfounded, and in fact that the opposite is true.
Today, even very young children spend an increased amount of their time sitting staring at computer screens or watching DVD's.
This, combined with the decreasing emphasis in schools on competitive physical activity and sports, children are leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles.
This lack of activity that was formally provided by children's play and natural instinct to runaround and exercise together, leads to poor development of motor skills, muscle strength, flexibility, endurance and a decrease in cardiovascular development.
Combine this with a very poor modern diet and its no wonder that it's predicted that this generation of children will have a higher level of morbidity than their parents.
Also consider the psychological aspects of this for children who leave the totally non-competitive school environment and walk out into a hugely competitive world.
Therefore, there are huge benefits for young children to take part in supervised exercise with experienced instructors, who can educate them on not only safe and purposeful exercise, but effective eating habits.
